Practice Mindfulness in Colorado Springs

Mindfulness is the practice of paying deliberate, sustained attention to the present moment without judging what you find there. It means noticing your thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and surroundings as they arise, rather than getting swept into replaying the past or rehearsing the future. Rooted in Buddhist meditation traditions, mindfulness was adapted for secular use in the late twentieth century, most notably through Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program, and it has since become a widely studied approach in psychology and medicine.

Polaris Wellness Group has a number of counselors specifically trained in mindfulness.

Mindfulness as Awareness

At its core, mindfulness involves two intertwined qualities: awareness and acceptance. Awareness is the simple act of observing what is happening, whether that’s the rhythm of your breath, the tension in your shoulders, or a wave of irritation. Acceptance means meeting those experiences with curiosity and openness rather than trying to suppress them or label them as good or bad. This isn’t the same as passivity or resignation; rather, it creates a small gap between experience and reaction, which gives people more choice in how they respond. Mindfulness can be cultivated through formal practices like seated meditation or body scans, but it can also be woven into everyday activities such as eating, walking, or listening to another person. Research suggests that regular practice can reduce stress, improve focus, and support emotional regulation, though it is best understood as a skill developed over time rather than a quick fix.

How Can Mindfulness Improve Your Life?

Mindfulness is useful in just about any situation, from everyday stressors in modern life, to more complicated and distressing situations. Some of the many ways that mindfulness can be a useful tool include:

  • Reduces stress: Paying attention to the present helps calm the mental loop of worry, lowering your body’s stress response over time.
  • Improves focus: Practicing sustained attention strengthens your ability to concentrate and resist distractions.
  • Supports emotional regulation: Noticing emotions without immediately reacting gives you space to respond thoughtfully rather than impulsively.
  • Eases anxiety and low mood: Mindfulness-based programs have been shown to help reduce symptoms of anxiety and prevent relapse in depression.
  • Improves sleep: Learning to quiet a racing mind can make it easier to fall asleep and rest more deeply.
  • Strengthens relationships: Being fully present when listening to others builds empathy, patience, and better communication.
  • Increases self-awareness: Observing your thoughts and habits makes it easier to recognize unhelpful patterns and change them.
  • Helps manage pain: Changing your relationship to discomfort can reduce how distressing chronic pain feels.
  • Enhances enjoyment of daily life: Savoring small moments, like a meal or a walk, makes ordinary experiences richer.
  • Builds resilience: Meeting difficulties with acceptance and curiosity helps you recover from setbacks more effectively.
  • Encourages healthier habits: Greater awareness of hunger, fatigue, and cravings can support better choices around eating, drinking, and rest.
