Person Centered Therapy Colorado Springs

Client Focused Therapy in Colorado Springs

Person-Centered Therapy (PCT), also called client-centered therapy, is a humanistic approach to psychotherapy developed by psychologist Carl Rogers in the 1940s–50s. The central belief is that people have an innate capacity for growth and self-healing. The therapist’s role is not to diagnose or direct, but to create a safe, supportive environment where the client can explore their feelings and find their own answers.

Polaris Wellness Group is proud to offer PCT, with a number of counselors trained in these methods

Our PCT Therapists

The Three Core Conditions (Rogers' "Necessary and Sufficient")

Rogers identified three essential qualities the therapist must offer:

  1. Unconditional Positive Regard — Accepting and valuing the client without judgment, regardless of what they say or feel.
  2. Empathy — Deeply understanding the client’s experience from their perspective, not the therapist’s.
  3. Congruence (Authenticity) — The therapist is genuine and transparent, not hiding behind a professional facade.

Key Principles of PCT

  • The client is the expert on their own life, not the therapist.
  • Focus is on the present (how the client feels now) rather than past diagnoses or history.
  • The goal is self-actualization — helping the person become their truest, most fully functioning self.
  • The therapeutic relationship itself is the primary healing tool.

What It’s Used For

PCT is effective for depression, anxiety, grief, low self-esteem, relationship issues, and personal growth. It’s also widely used in counseling, education, and conflict resolution.

PCT remains one of the most influential therapy models and has shaped nearly all modern therapeutic approaches in some way.
